The Ramakrishna Math, Nagpur started functioning formally in 1928. Initially the activities undertaken by the Math were on a very small scale. But now the scope of the activities has become wide spread and manifold. In accordance with the motto of the Math and Mission – ‘आत्मनो मोक्षार्थं जगद्धिताय च’ i.e. for the liberation of the self and for the welfare of the world; and the dictum propagated by the great Swami Vivekananda – Service to man is service to God, we worship and serve people through these activities. Meditation, Prayer, Reading of Scriptures and the Ramakrishna-Vivekananda literature personal guidance definitely helps to improve intellectual, emotional, ethical and the spiritual quotient of man. So we pay special attention to these needs of the human beings.
In this temple, morning and evening prayers, daily worship (Nitya Pooja) and chanting of hymns are performed daily. On every Ekadashi day, Shri Ramnam Sankirtan is sung in the evening. The Birth Anniversaries of spiritual luminaries and incarnations – Bhagwan Sri Ramachandra, Bhagwan Shri Krishna, Bhagwan Buddha, Shri Shankaracharya, Jesus Christ and Holy days like Mahashivrati, Gurupournima, Shri Durga Mahashtami are celebrated with great religious fervour and devotion. The birth anniversaries of The Holy Trio – Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna, the Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi and Swami Vivekananda are celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm. On these occasions Special Pujas, Hawan are performed and Sankirtan, Bhajans are sung, the public meetings are held. Discourses on scriptures are held twice or thrice a week for the local devotees. A three day Spiritual Retreat is organized every year on the occasion of the Birth Anniversary of Bhagwan Shri Ramakrishna.
Temple of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna
The spiritually charged, serene and peaceful meditation hall has been providing solace, peace to a lot many people. We try to promote religious harmony as propogated by Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna.
The publication department, which was started in 1936, during the Birth Centenary year of Sri Ramakrishna, publishes Ramakrishna-Vivekananda and Vedanta literature in Hindi and Marathi. At present total number of published titles in Hindi & Marathi are 230 and 270 respectively.
A Marathi Monthly magazine, was started at the time of the Birthday Anniversary of Sri Ramakrishna in the month of March 1957. Devoted to high ideals, this magazine is free from narrowness, sectarianism and personal criticism and politics. The articles of the Monks of Sri Ramakrishna Order and other erudite scholars of Maharashtra are published in this magazine. It publishes articles on religion, philosophy, art, literature, history, science, etc. A DVD which contains collection of all the issues of this magazine from 1957-2013 has been brought out and is also available for readers who subscribe for it.
Public Library and Reading Hall
The library that was started in a small room with only 50 books in the year 1932 is now housed in spacious building. It contains books on philosophy, religion, education, culture, literature, sociology, history, arts, science, biographies, agriculture, computer science in various languages such as Sanskrit, Marathi, Hindi, English, Bengali. There are 57000 books in this Library, which include valuable reference books also. There are two separate Study Rooms for ladies and gents. There is a free Reading Hall on the first floor, which provides more than one hundred thirty periodicals and Newspapers to the readers.
A hostel is being run by the Math for the poor and the aspiring students (boys only) who want to take further college education after clearing their H.S.S.C. examination. In accordance with Swamijis ideals of man making and character building education we try to develop the overall personality of the students. A building which can accommodate about 50 students has been constructed on the sprawling campus of the Math. They are provided with the lodging, boarding facilities. We try our best to inculcate the high moral values of life in them along with the academic excellence. Weekly classes are held specially for the students.
Vivekananda Vidyarthi Bhawan
We have formed a study circle for students. The students conduct all the activities such as debate on different topics, discussions, lectures, General knowledge test etc. A special celebration of three days – Saraswati Puja during Vasant Panchami is also organized. The celebration includes the programmes like worship of Goddess Saraswati, Devotional songs, chanting, lectures, symposium and Bhajan. Every year a magazine named ‘Vivek’ is released at the hands of Chief Guest. It includes articles written by students on various subjects.
On the occasion of the birth anniversay of Rev. Swami Niranjananandaji Maharaj i.e. Shrawan Purnima, a ‘Special Vidyarthi Homa’ (Yajna) is performed for the welfare and well being of the students. Students take 5 vows of discipline and good conduct and make offerings in the sacred fire of the Homa. This is arranged with a view to inculcate noble values in them so that they become ideal students and citizens.
Charitable Homeopathy Dispensary : To begin with the Math started a Charitable Homeopathy Dispensary in the Ashrama itself and then it was shifted to the poor locality of Indora, which is about 6 Km away from the Math. People from the adjoining poor locality derive benefit from this dispensary.
Allopathic Mobile Dispensary : With a view to serve the poor people of villages, who are deprived of the medical facilities, we have a mobile dispensary. We take the medical facility to the doors of the villagers. About 11 centres on 3 different routes twice a week – covering 70 villages around Nagpur avail this facility. With the Doctors and the other Paramedical Staff of 3 persons, the vehicle plies on an average 60 km. every day (except Monday) on Bhandara, Umred and Koradi routes.
Vivekananda Charitable Multi Therapy Dispensary : To augment further the Medical and Diagnostic facilities we have started a Multi Therapy Dispensary. The eminent doctors of the city render their services here, empathetically treat the patients charging only a meagre fee. The multi speciality dispensary includes the following specialities.

Free Eye Camps : We organize free Eye-Camps twice a year in rural area. In this camps we provide the facilities of screening of eyes, operations of cataract and distribution of spectacles free of cost.
Swami Vivekananda’s ideas of Man-Making and Character-Building Education serve as the guiding light for the educational activities conducted by Ramakrishna Math, Nagpur. The students today find themselves at the crossroads. The fast changing social trends on one end and the dynamic technological advances along with cut-throat competitions which have changed the socio-economic structures on the other end, have made the students panicked and devoid of life-guiding principles. Thus, it is our attempt to equip them with necessary values and vision so that they themselves build up their own lives. Accomplishing material prosperity along with inner enrichment is to be harmoniously worked out.
Free Distribution of School Uniforms and Educational Materials : To support the poor and the needy students to pursue education, we provide the following educational materials free of cost – Uniform, Note-books, Compass boxes, Pens, School bags. Every year more than thousand students are benefited by this help.
Swami Vivekananda Youth Forum : Swami Vivekananda has said – ‘‘Education is the manifestations of the perfection already in man.’’ Keeping this in view we try to help the students to manifest perfection through various ways. Debates, discussions, documentaries, lectures, symposiums on selected topics, Personality Development Programmes from social, cultural and spiritual angles are organized. These sessions are held on Sundays. Spiritual camps are also organized for the youths.
Every Sunday, we hold a weekly programme comprising of two sessions of nearly an hour each. In the first session the students are encouraged to present their views through speeches, group discussions, debates and work-sheets. In the second session, the students are introduced to the treasures of Indian culture and philosophy along with the lives and achievements of great people from various walks of life. The Life and Teachings of Swami Vivekananda is also elaborately presented before the youth.
The monks of the Ramakrishna Order along with eminent scholars, professionals, sports-persons etc. are invited to share their life’s experiences and discuss with youth about their aspirations and problems. Special attention is paid on the interaction among the students and the monks.
National Youth Day Celebration : National youth day is celebrated every year on 12th January, the birth day of Swami Vivekananda in the Schools in rural area every year in which large number of students participate. Various cultural events are organized by the students. Various competitions including Drawing, Elocution, Essay Writing etc. are held every year many schools and prizes are distributed to the students.
Rally : Every year a Rally is organized on 12th January, the National Youth Day in the rural area. In this colourful Rally students from various schools participate along with Bands & Lazims. The rally is converged into a public meeting in which the dignitaries deliver the thought provoking speeches. The speeches and the cultural programmes, are attended by large number of students. To this event a wide coverage is given by the newspaper of Nagpur and a live telecast of the event is also aired.
Spiritual Retreat : After Sri Ramakrishna Tithi Pooja a three day Spiritual Retreat is held for the devotees. The learned monks of the Order guide the devotees. During this time the Math is agog with the Spiritual Activities throughout the day. A particular topic from the scriptures is selected as the theme for discourses and a thorough discussion on the same is done for three days consecutively. Kirtan, Bhajan etc. are the special attractions of the Retreat.
Narayan Seva : Every year on the occasion of the birth anniversary celebration of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishna poor, needy and old people from the nearby area are worshipped as Narayan and they are given lunch, sarees, towels, pants, T-shirts, soaps etc.
Akhandananda Swachata Prakalpa : Ramakrishna Math, Nagpur, conducts Cleanliness drive under the above activity on the Sundays in different localities, e.g. Slum Areas, Schools & Colleges, Government Campuses – RTO & Corporation, Villages & streets, Temple premises etc. On every Sunday a group of our dedicated volunteers, devotees & monks participate in the Swachhata Campaign. The rally of children displaying the slogan-plaques and spreading the message of cleanliness is taken out.
Bal Sanskar Shibir : The dire need of today is to mould the minds of children properly to make them face the challenges of life ably. With this purpose every year during the summer vacation Bal Sanskar Shibir is arranged. Children between the age group of 8 to 14 can participate in it. The children are taught Yogasanas, Prayers, Bhajans, Vedic Chanting, Crafts, Drawing, Painting etc. Matri-Pitri Pujan, general discipline, various games, rally etc. are the special features of this activity. Thus they get a chance to develop their overall personality.
