Activities of the Ashrama

Since its establishment in a small hut in 1928, the Ashrama has been silently serving the Society in various ways without any distinction of caste, creed, religion, etc. The Ashrama, which was started by the divine will of Swami Shivananda (Sri Mahapurush Maharaj) has attained to its present state by the grace of God and patronage of the generous public. At present it is conducting the above activities.

History of Nagpur Math

Early 1925:
Mahapurush Maharaj (Swami Shivananda), direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna, 2nd President of Ramakrishna Order, consents to setting up to permanent Ashrama in Nagpur

February 1927:
Mahapursh Maharaj worships Sri Ramakrishna on Ashrama Land and lays corner stone
Mid 1927:
Mahapursh Maharaj selects Swami Bhaskareshwaranandaji to spread Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideas in Nagpur
September 1928:
Swami Bhaskareshwaranandaji begins the Ashram - a shrine, a kitchen, and a Homeopathic Dispensary in that hut.
1929-1934:
The Ashrama takes shape. The main building is constructed in 1929-30. Library is opened in 1932. Temple is constructed in 1933-34. Regular worship begins in February 1934.
November 1934:
First initiation in Nagpur. Given by a Srimat Swami Akhandanandaji Maharaj , direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna.
1936:
Birth Centenary year of Bhagwan Sri Ramakrishana is celebrated with great enthusiasm. A Conference of all Religions is the highlight.

1937-1944:
New Brahmacharis / Sadhus join the Nagpur Math.

1945-1965:
Consolidation of the Nagpur Ashrama.

Silver Jubilee 1954:
The Ashrama celebrates 25 years under Sri Ramakrishna's blessings.

January 1976:
Swami Bhaskareshwaranandaji leaving mortal coils.
Golden Jubilee 1979:
The Ashrama celebrates 50 years under Sri Ramakrishna's blessings.
